How many sessions of teeth whitening do I need to pay for?

Teeth get brighter even with one session of in-office whitening, but if the original color is dark or you want more brightness, it is split over several sessions. How many are needed depends on the original color, the cause of discoloration, and how sensitive your teeth are, so it is best to decide after seeing the result of the first session. Calculated with common combinations, it looks like this.

CaseCombinationTotal
Once, lightlyIn-office whitening, 1 session₩110,000
Several times before an eventIn-office whitening, 3 sessions₩330,000
Upper and lower at homeAt-home whitening, 2 arches₩500,000
Brighten quickly and maintain at homeIn-office whitening, 3 sessions + at-home whitening, 2 arches₩830,000

For people with a set date, such as a wedding or a photo shoot, I tell them to allow at least 2–3 weeks. Sensitivity needs time to settle between sessions, and for a few days right after whitening the color looks slightly brighter before it settles.

Are there costs before whitening?

If there is thick tartar or staining from cigarettes or coffee, it has to be removed before whitening so the agent reaches the teeth evenly. If there are cavities or gum inflammation, those are treated first.

  • Insurance-covered scaling: once a year for ages 19 and over
  • Scaling not covered by insurance: ₩60,000
  • Stain removal: ₩100,000

There can also be costs after whitening. Composite fillings and crowns on the front teeth do not get whiter with whitening, so if they look a different color after the teeth brighten, the composite fillings are sometimes redone (₩100,000–₩300,000 per area). More details are in the article whether fillings get whiter too.

Are in-office whitening and self-whitening as different as their prices?

Over-the-counter self-whitening products are cheap and convenient, but the agent concentration is limited to a low level, so they often only lighten surface stains. With in-office whitening, cavities, gums, and restorations are checked first, then the gums are protected and a higher-concentration agent is used. So the change is faster, but sensitivity can occur to the same degree.

Self-whitening with cavities or cracked teeth can cause severe sensitivity. For an explanation of products sold in stores such as Olive Young, see the article how well over-the-counter whitening products work.

How we handle it at Wonjin Dental

Before whitening, I first check where the composite fillings and crowns on the front teeth are, and tell you in advance where there will be a color difference after whitening. If in-office teeth whitening does not give the brightness you want, or you also want to change the shape, I also explain Brinate, which is added on without drilling. Wonjin Dental is right by Gangnam Station Exit 1.

Frequently asked questions

Is teeth whitening covered by health insurance?

No. It is a cosmetic treatment to brighten tooth color, so it is not covered by insurance and value-added tax is added. Scaling done once a year before whitening is covered by insurance if it meets the insurance criteria.

Does just one session work?

Most people notice their teeth are brighter after just one session. However, if the original color is very dark or the cause of discoloration is deep, several sessions are needed, and how much brighter teeth get differs from person to person.

Does whitening make teeth sensitive?

Sensitivity is the most common side effect, and it usually settles within 1–2 days. For people who already have sensitive teeth or receded gums, it may last longer, so please tell us in advance. If sensitivity is severe, we lengthen the interval between sessions.

How long do the effects of whitening last?

They usually last from a few months to 1–2 years, and the color returns faster the more you enjoy coffee, tea, or cigarettes. If you have at-home whitening trays, you can maintain the color by occasionally doing it again at home.
