Most people who come for orthodontics come because of their front teeth. The front teeth have a gap, stick out, or one has slipped back. In the mirror it looks like something is missing, but usually the tooth is simply not where it should be.
Thicken the surface without fixing the position, and the lips feel it first. The mouth does not close easily, the teeth catch when you talk, and your profile looks even fuller. Orthodontics does not make teeth thicker; it moves the teeth you have back to where they belong.
For some people, moving just a few front teeth changes the smile line at once. But if the height of the lower molars is pushing the front teeth up, pulling only the front teeth back will not hold. Dr. Soyeon Kim goes through the photos with you and explains first where the cause lies. When the whole arch does not need to move, Dr. Kim says so.
Orthodontics takes time. Push teeth too hard to finish quickly and the roots cannot keep up, and the gumline recedes first. So we follow the pace of the roots rather than the pace you can see. During treatment we show you the mirror often and check together that the teeth are moving into place.
