How many years do porcelain veneers usually last?

With good care, ceramic veneers usually last 10 years or more. Long-term studies report 10-year survival rates of roughly 80–90%, and some last more than 20 years. Resin veneers are made of a softer material that discolors easily, so they usually need attention after around 5 to 7 years.

MaterialTypical lifespanCommon problems
Ceramic porcelain veneers10–15 years or moreChipping, staining at the edges, gum recession
Resin veneers (resin covering)Around 5–7 yearsDiscoloration, wear, small chips

These numbers are only averages. Even with the same material, depending on the mouth and habits, veneers may chip within a few years or last 20 years.

What shortens the lifespan of porcelain veneers?

What shortens the lifespan of veneers most is force concentrated on the front teeth. Common causes are as follows.

  • Grinding and clenching: Force concentrates on the front teeth during sleep, making it the most common cause of chipping
  • Biting through food with the front teeth: Ribs, dried squid, biting into whole apples, crunching ice
  • Bite: With an edge-to-edge bite, where the upper and lower front teeth meet tip to tip, force concentrates on the edges
  • Cavities and gum disease: Cavities form at the edges, or the gums recede and expose the margins
  • Bonding surface: Bonding to enamel (the hard outer layer of the tooth) is strongest, and when a lot of dentin (the layer beneath the enamel) is exposed, the risk of the veneer coming off increases

At the consultation, I always ask whether you grind your teeth. Many people don't know themselves, so I sometimes judge from the worn shape of the tooth edges.

When should porcelain veneers be replaced?

Replacement is decided by condition, not by the number of years. Get them checked if you notice any of the following changes.

  • When part of a veneer chips or a crack is visible
  • When an edge lifts so it catches on your tongue or food gets stuck
  • When a brown line appears at the margin and won't come off with brushing
  • When the gums recede and the margin between the veneer and the tooth becomes visible
  • When there is ongoing sensitivity to cold or pain in just one spot (possible cavity at the edge)

Small chips or staining at the edges can sometimes be handled by polishing or touching up with resin. If a veneer comes off whole with no cracks, it may be rebonded. Detailed criteria are in the articles How to redo a chipped porcelain veneer and Porcelain veneer discoloration.

Do the teeth need to be trimmed more when replacing porcelain veneers?

When replacing prep-type veneers, the tooth is often trimmed a little more in the process of grinding off the old veneer and adhesive. So after repeated replacements, some people move on to crowns. The less the tooth is trimmed the first time, the more options remain later.

When replacing them, we also check how much the gums have receded in the meantime and whether there are cavities. If you only bond new veneers and leave the cause as it is, the same problem is likely to come back.

How we do it at Wonjin Dental

The veneers we mainly do at Wonjin Dental are Brinate, placed without trimming, so they are bonded on top of the enamel, which is left as it is. So even if replacement is needed later, more of the tooth remains than with teeth trimmed from the start. However, if the teeth stick out forward or there is a skeletal protruding mouth, I don't place them.

For people who grind their teeth, I recommend a night guard worn at night (₩500,000, as of September 2026). It helps not only the veneers but also the natural teeth and the jaw joint.

Frequently asked questions

Do they have to be replaced after 10 years?

No. 10 years is only an average, and if there's no chipping or lifting and the gums are healthy, you can keep using them. Instead, it's a good idea to have yearly check-ups to catch small changes early.

Can the tooth under a porcelain veneer get a cavity?

The veneer itself doesn't decay, but cavities can form at the margin where the veneer meets the tooth. Use floss so plaque doesn't build up at the margin, and get regular scaling.

Will porcelain veneers get whiter with whitening?

Ceramic and resin don't change color with whitening agents. If only the neighboring teeth get brighter, a color difference can appear, so if you want whitening, it's best to do it before the veneers.

How often should I get check-ups?

I usually recommend once every 6 months to a year. Those aged 19 and over can get health-insurance scaling once a year, so it's convenient to check the veneer margins and bite at the same time.
