What are self-ligating brackets?
They are a fixed orthodontic appliance with a clip built into the bracket itself that holds the wire. I am often asked, “That appliance hurts less and finishes faster, right?” — but the key difference is how the wire is held. Regular brackets are tied with elastic rings or fine wire (ligature wire), while self-ligating brackets secure it by opening and closing a clip.

If the body is ceramic, it looks closer to tooth color than metal. You can think of ceramic self-ligating brackets as a less noticeable material combined with a clip structure.
What’s the difference between self-ligating and regular braces?
| Comparison | Regular metal brackets | Ceramic self-ligating brackets |
|---|---|---|
| Bracket material | Metal | Mainly ceramic |
| Visibility | Relatively noticeable | Blends with tooth color and stands out less |
| Wire fixation | Tied with elastic rings or ligature wire | Clip built into the bracket |
| Changing and adjusting the wire | Involves tying and untying | Relatively simple, by opening and closing the clip |
| Treatment time | Varies by case | We don’t claim the appliance alone shortens it |
The structural difference doesn’t determine the treatment result. Depending on the amount of movement, whether teeth are extracted, the bite, and the condition of the alveolar bone (the bone supporting the teeth), the plan differs even with the same appliance.
There is also a difference in maintenance. Elastic rings become stained and stretched over time and are changed at every visit, but self-ligating brackets don’t have that step. Still, you need to clean with an orthodontic toothbrush and an interdental brush so food doesn’t get stuck around the clips — that part is the same.
Do self-ligating braces hurt less and finish faster?
That can’t be said for certain. Pain depends on the force when the teeth first start to move, the type of wire, the amount of movement, and individual sensitivity. Treatment time is also determined by the complexity of the alignment, extraction, the distance of movement, the bite, and how well appointments and care are kept up. Research also lacks evidence that self-ligating brackets clearly shorten the overall treatment time.
Early on, the line of teeth may seem to straighten quickly, but even after the teeth are aligned, there are still months left to adjust the upper-lower bite, the angle of the front teeth, and the position of the molars.
With self-ligating braces, can I avoid extraction?
No. The appliance doesn’t decide on extraction. What decides it is how much space is lacking for alignment, how far the front teeth need to move back, and whether changes are needed in the lips and profile. How extraction is decided is covered separately in extraction vs. non-extraction orthodontics.
The movement plan comes first in deciding the orthodontic approach, and then the appliance is chosen for visibility and ease of care. Even with the same self-ligating brackets, the timeline and number of visits vary with the amount of movement and whether teeth are extracted.
How we do it at Wonjin Dental
Full orthodontics at Wonjin Dental is done with Clippy C, a ceramic self-ligating bracket. We recommend it for people who need a fixed appliance but are uncomfortable with a lot of visible metal, and for people whose tooth movement suits an attached appliance better than clear aligners. If the movement can be achieved with aligner trays, we look at clear aligners.
Rather than you coming in having decided on an appliance name, I first explain why orthodontics is needed and where the front teeth and molars will go. Choosing an appliance in general is covered in how to choose an orthodontic appliance. Full orthodontics (Clippy C) is ₩5,000,000 and an orthodontic diagnosis is ₩100,000 (as of September 2026, all fees).
Frequently asked questions
How often do I need to visit with self-ligating braces?
The wire is usually changed or adjusted every 4–6 weeks. The exact interval is set according to the stage of movement.
Do ceramic brackets stain or break?
The ceramic body tends to stain little, but it can break if you bite down hard on hard food. Avoid ice, hard nuts and sticky caramel.
Do I still wear rubber bands with self-ligating braces?
At the stage of adjusting how the upper and lower teeth meet, rubber bands (elastics) are sometimes worn regardless of the type of appliance. These are different from the elastic ligature rings that tie the wire.
What foods should I avoid during orthodontics?
Hard foods like ice, hard nuts and meat on the bone, and sticky foods like caramel and rice cakes, can easily knock off brackets. Cut apples and carrots into small pieces and eat them with your molars.
