Why do teeth feel sensitive after whitening?

Because the whitening agent travels along the tubules (tiny tubes) in the dentin beneath the enamel and briefly irritates the nerve endings. That's why cold water, cold air, or sweetness gives a sharp twinge. It doesn't mean the tooth is dissolving or the nerve is damaged; the tubules are just temporarily sensitive.

In the clinic we often hear, "Please make it so it doesn't hurt." I don't promise whitening without sensitivity. Instead, I tell you in advance how long it may last and what to avoid in the meantime.

It also differs by whitening method. In-office whitening uses a higher concentration, so sensitivity concentrates in a short time, while at-home whitening uses a lower concentration but over several days, so mild sensitivity can continue.

How many days does whitening sensitivity last?

Most of it eases within a day or two, and at most it lasts close to a week. It is usually worst on the day of whitening and gradually decreases.

Which teeth are more sensitive?

ConditionSensitivityWhat to check first
Already sensitive teethWorseCause of the sensitivity
Teeth with receding gums and exposed rootsWorseExposed dentin
Teeth with cracksWorseAgent gets into the crack
Composite fillings and restorationsNot sensitiveTheir color doesn't change either

Where the gums have receded, dentin is exposed without enamel, so the tubules are already open. If there is a crack, more of the agent gets into the gap. In these cases, we look at the cause before whitening. Teeth with cavities or with gaps at the edge of a filling can also become sensitive as the agent gets into the gap, so we treat them before whitening.

What should I avoid when my teeth are sensitive after whitening?

  • Ice, very cold water and drinks
  • Using additional whitening products at home (irritating the same teeth again)
  • Highly acidic food like soda or lemon
  • Brushing hard

Breathing through your mouth on cold, windy days also makes sensitivity worse. Stick to lukewarm water for a few days, and a sensitivity toothpaste helps. For a day or two right after whitening, it's also best to cut down on strongly colored food like coffee, wine, and curry. Separately from sensitivity, this is a period when teeth stain easily.

Contact the dentist if you have these symptoms

If it's not a sharp twinge but throbbing like a pulse, hurts even at rest, or hasn't eased after a week, it may not be whitening sensitivity. Also let us know if your gums turn white and sore or sting. If a crack is deep or there's a problem near the nerve, we don't continue whitening. We don't rush the next session while sensitivity hasn't settled, and we postpone the schedule if needed.

Frequently asked questions

If the sensitivity is severe, is the whitening effect stronger too?

Sensitivity and whitening effect are separate. Having no sensitivity doesn't mean your teeth got less white, and having a lot of sensitivity doesn't mean they got whiter.

With whitening split into several sessions, will it be sensitive every time?

Sensitivity can occur with each session, but doing the next session after the previous sensitivity has settled reduces the burden. If the sensitivity was severe, we lengthen the interval.

Will filled teeth be sensitive with whitening?

Composite fillings and restorations themselves are not sensitive, but their color doesn't change either. Details are in Teeth whitening: do composite fillings and crowns turn white too?
