What foods are good for your gums?

Rather than any single food, a diet with a balance of vegetables and fruit, protein, and calcium is good for your gums. “My gums keep swelling—what should I eat?” This is a question we hear very often in the clinic. Here's what food can and can't do.

Will eating lots of vitamin C stop bleeding gums?

It helps if your nutrition was lacking, but most gum bleeding does not stop with vitamins. A severe deficiency can weaken the gums, but that is not common. If the same spot bleeds every time you brush, we suspect inflammation at that spot before a deficiency.

Food does not replace gum treatment. The common cause of recurring bleeding and swelling is bacteria in the plaque and tartar between the teeth and gums. Rather than stacking several gum health supplements, look at your everyday meals first.

Vegetables and fruit also make you produce a lot of saliva while chewing, which helps rinse the mouth. But this doesn't replace brushing and flossing either. Diet is a lifestyle habit that supports gum treatment from the side.

What foods should I avoid when my gums are swollen?

Sugary drinks and snacks create an environment where plaque sticks easily. Drink water instead of sweetened drinks. On days when your gums are swollen and sensitive, very hot, spicy, or salty food and hard, sharp food can make the pain worse. Smoking and alcohol slow gum recovery, so cut down.

If you often eat sticky snacks, it's better to reduce how often rather than how much. The longer sugar stays in your mouth, the more bacteria grow. Just rinsing with water once after a snack can slow how fast plaque builds up.

What if the bleeding keeps coming back even with a good diet?

Tartar doesn't dissolve with food, so it has to be removed at the dentist. Early gum inflammation often improves with scaling and brushing habits. If the inflammation has gone deep inside the gums, gum treatment such as root planing, which smooths the root surface, is needed.

If you have the symptoms below, check the condition of your gums rather than looking for more foods.

  • Your gums bleed every time you brush
  • Your gums swell often
  • Your bad breath has suddenly gotten worse
  • Your teeth look longer or feel loose when you chew

How often you should get scaling is summarized separately in how often to get scaling.

How we do it at Wonjin Dental

We don't decide on major treatment just because your gums bleed. We decide the steps after looking at where it bleeds, how much tartar there is, and whether the gum pockets and bone have changed. If bleeding is frequent or there is early periodontitis, we set shorter checkup intervals and point out the spots you're missing at home. Rather than what to eat, we first check why it keeps bleeding.

Frequently asked questions

Do gum supplements work?

They can be a supplement for people whose meals lack nutrition. But they can't remove tartar and inflammation, so if bleeding keeps recurring while you take supplements, you need to be seen.

Is using a gum-care toothpaste enough?

It's a supplement that eases symptoms for a while. It can't remove hard tartar, so it doesn't replace scaling.

Do water flossers or electric toothbrushes help?

They help as a supplement for reducing plaque. While your gums are badly swollen and bleeding, use them on the lowest water pressure and vibration setting.

My gums bled less when I smoked—why?

Smoking only constricts the blood vessels in the gums so they appear to bleed less; the inflammation stays the same or goes deeper. Don't be reassured by less bleeding. Smoking also slows recovery after gum treatment.
