Why can no-prep veneers look thick?
Because the thickness of the porcelain is added directly on top of an unprepared tooth. We often hear, “I heard that if you don't prepare the teeth, the front teeth look bulky.” The result depends on how thin the porcelain is and whether the front surface already sticks out. Adding anything on top of a tooth that already sticks out makes it stick out that much more.
It's similar to layering clothes. Layering thick clothes makes you look bulky, while layering thin ones gives less of that impression. If your body already leans forward, even thin clothes show it more.
Which teeth don't look thick?
If a tooth sits inward from the arch line or is small, like a peg lateral, there is room to build up. When a thin layer of volume is added to a small tooth, a front surface that looked set back appears in line with the others.
| Current front surface | Treatment |
|---|---|
| Not protruding and even | Placed on top without preparation |
| Slightly protruding or slightly overlapping | Reshaped only within the enamel |
| Strongly protruding or skeletal protrusion | Not bonded; teeth are moved first |
For slightly protruding teeth, we shape the surface only within the enamel (the outer layer of the tooth) and seat the porcelain. We don't cut into the dentin. If they stick out a lot, we first move the teeth with partial orthodontics. If it can't be done, I tell you so first.
What are the other downsides of no-prep veneers?
- Because they're thin, they're weaker at masking a dark underlying color.
- It's hard to change shape and size a lot. Changes can only go in the direction of adding.
- If a small step remains at the margin, it needs careful flossing.
- Once bonded, even if removed, the tooth isn't exactly the same as at first.
Choosing with the downsides in mind reduces regret. Common reasons for regret are summarized in why people regret no-prep veneers.
If they're thin, do they break easily?
Not necessarily. Before bonding, thin porcelain looks weak enough to crumble in your hand, but once bonded to the tooth, it takes force as one unit with the tooth. When the porcelain is firmly bonded to the tooth, impact is shared among the porcelain, the bonding layer, and the tooth. The cause of veneers coming off or chipping is more often the bond, a bite where one tooth touches first, or grinding than the thickness. That said, being thin doesn't mean they can be placed on protruding teeth. We look at position first, then choose the thickness.
How we do it at Wonjin Dental
In consultation, I first look at whether the teeth currently stick out, rather than the name of the porcelain. If they sit inward, I talk about Brinate, placed on top without preparation, and for teeth where a change in thickness would be noticeable, I recommend the 0.1mm options.
| Brinate | Fabrication | Thickness | Time | Price per tooth |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | Machine-pressed | 0.3mm | Same day possible | ₩330,000 |
| Build-up | Hand-layered | 0.1mm | About 1 week | ₩550,000 |
| Platinum | Hand-layered | 0.1mm | About 2 weeks | ₩990,000 |
As of September 2026, VAT included (cosmetic treatment); all items are on the full fee list. We also don't deeply prepare protruding teeth just to keep them from looking thick. Before bonding, we place the finished porcelain in your mouth and check both the front view and the profile, and if it looks thick, we don't bond it then and there but redo the plan.
Frequently asked questions
Is the difference between 0.1mm and 0.3mm visible?
On one tooth the difference is small, but when several are side by side, the total added thickness differs. If the teeth are already close to the arch line, 0.1mm has the advantage, though it's hand-layered and takes longer.
How do I care for them after bonding?
Don't bite through hard things with your front teeth, and floss along the margins. At regular checkups, we check the porcelain margins and gums together.
If they look thick, can they be thinned later?
Slight adjustment by smoothing the surface is possible, but because the porcelain is thin, only a little can be reduced. That's why we try them on before bonding to check how thick they feel.
Are they less noticeable if I have full lips?
If your lips are full and relaxed, the same thickness tends to show less. On the other hand, if your lips are thin, even small changes show in profile, so we check both the front and side views at the try-in stage.
