What is the difference between clear aligners and braces?
Clear aligners move the teeth by switching step by step through clear trays you put in and take out yourself, while braces apply force 24 hours a day with brackets bonded to the teeth and a wire. Both the pros and cons come from this difference.
| Category | Clear aligners | Braces |
|---|---|---|
| Visibility | Noticeable only up close | Metal is easy to see; ceramic is less visible |
| Removal | Taken out for meals and brushing | Cannot be taken out |
| Food | Almost no restrictions if you take them out to eat | Be careful with hard and sticky foods |
| Brushing | Take them out and brush as usual | Orthodontic toothbrush and interdental brush needed |
| What determines the result | Wearing them 20 to 22 hours a day | Keeping the brackets from coming off |
| Visit interval | Usually every 6 to 10 weeks | Usually every 4 to 6 weeks |
Are clear aligners less effective than braces?
It is less that they are weaker and more that they are good at different movements. Clear aligners are also good at tipping teeth into line or closing small gaps, but braces are more reliable for moving a tooth, root and all, over a long distance.
- Cases where clear aligners work easily: mild crowding, twisted front teeth, small gaps, teeth that shifted back a little after previous orthodontics
- Cases where braces work easily: orthodontics that involves extracting teeth and closing the space, rotating round teeth (canines and premolars) a lot, moving teeth a long way up or down
So rather than “which one is better,” I first look at “what movements do my teeth need to make.” For whether extraction is needed, see Why teeth are extracted for orthodontics.
What are the disadvantages of clear aligners?
The biggest disadvantage is that the result depends on wearing habits. If the time they are left out gets long, the teeth can't keep up with the plan, and treatment takes longer because the trays have to be redesigned.
- The trays can be lost or broken.
- You have to take them out to drink anything other than water, which is a hassle.
- Attachments (small resin bumps) bonded to the teeth can be visible up close.
What are the disadvantages of braces?
The disadvantage of braces is upkeep. Food and plaque easily remain around the brackets, and if brushing is insufficient, white spots (decalcification, marks where the enamel has weakened) or cavities can form on the tooth surface.
For the first few weeks, the brackets can rub and cause sores inside the mouth, and brackets can come off when chewing hard food. A dull, achy feeling for 2 to 3 days after the wire is adjusted is common.
Which has a shorter treatment time?
For the same level of difficulty, the treatment time is usually similar. Mild alignment takes 6 to 12 months with either method, and orthodontics that changes the whole bite takes around 1.5 to 2.5 years. What determines the time is not the type of appliance so much as how far the teeth move, whether teeth are extracted, and how well you cooperate.
With clear aligners, treatment gets longer if wearing time falls short, and with braces, it gets longer if brackets come off often. In the end, choosing the method that is easy to stick to in your daily life is how you keep to the timeline, whichever it is.
How we do it at Wonjin Dental
Wonjin Dental offers all three methods: clear aligners (Seraphin), full orthodontics with self-ligating brackets (Clippy C), and partial orthodontics (MTA) focused on the front teeth. After the orthodontic diagnosis, I tell you which method fits and why.
How self-ligating brackets differ from regular brackets is written up separately in Why self-ligating brackets differ from regular orthodontics.
Frequently asked questions
Are clear aligners and braces ever combined?
Yes. For example, large movements are done first with braces and finished with clear aligners, or auxiliary appliances are attached to only some teeth. It is a plan that divides up the strengths of both methods, so ask whether it is possible at your diagnosis.
Are ceramic braces as invisible as clear aligners?
They are much less visible than metal, but up close the shape of the brackets and the wire can be seen. If you are often photographed or give presentations and visible appliances bother you, clear aligners are more comfortable; if managing wearing time is a burden, ceramic braces are more realistic.
Can teenagers get clear aligners?
Yes, once most of the permanent teeth have come in. However, they have to keep up the wearing time themselves, so whether it can be managed together with a parent or guardian matters more than the type of appliance.
