When can I eat a meal after an implant?
Once the anesthesia has completely worn off, you can eat even on the same day. Eating while numb makes it easy to bite your tongue or cheek or burn yourself on hot food, so before the anesthesia wears off it is best to have only water. After that, you widen what you eat to match how fast the wound heals.
| Timing | Foods you can eat | Still avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Same day (after the anesthesia wears off) | Lukewarm porridge, thin rice gruel, yogurt, soy milk | Hot soups, straws, alcohol |
| Days 1–3 | Porridge, steamed egg, tofu, mashed potatoes, bananas | Spicy and salty foods, foods with seeds or sesame |
| Days 4–7 | Soft-cooked rice, tender fish, well-cooked vegetables (on the other side) | Tough meat, nuts |
| 1–2 weeks (after stitches are removed) | Most normal foods (on the other side) | Chewing hard things on the implant side |
| While the bone bonds (usually 2–6 months) | Normal foods | Strong force on the implant site |
| After the final crown is placed | Eat as with natural teeth | Biting down on ice, bones, or hard candy |
More important than the type of food is “not chewing on the implant site.” If force is applied repeatedly before the bone and the implant bond, the stability can weaken.
What foods should I avoid after an implant?
For the first 1–2 weeks, avoid foods that irritate the wound or get stuck in the hole.
- Hot foods and soups: they widen blood vessels and can cause bleeding again.
- Spicy, salty, and sour foods: they can sting the stitched area and worsen inflammation.
- Mixed grains, sesame, fruits with seeds: the grains get stuck between the stitches.
- Nuts, scorched rice crisps, dried squid: they are hard or chewy and put a lot of force on the jaw.
- Rice cakes, caramel, gum: if you have a temporary tooth, they can stick to it and pull it off.
When can I drink alcohol after an implant?
I recommend avoiding alcohol at least until the stitches are removed (usually 7–10 days). Alcohol increases bleeding and swelling, and taking it with antibiotics or painkillers puts a burden on the liver. If a bone graft or sinus lift was done as well, it is good to cut back for 2 weeks or more, and if possible for the whole period while the bone bonds. The guideline differs by surgical method, so check before surgery whether an implant bone graft will be done.
Can I drink coffee after an implant?
Avoid it on the day of surgery, and from the next day you can drink it once it has cooled to lukewarm. Hot coffee can cause bleeding again. Do not use a straw for the first week, because the suction can dislodge the blood clot covering the wound. Carbonated drinks are also irritating for the first few days, so it is good to cut back.
How should I brush and rinse after meals?
On the day of surgery, do not rinse or spit hard; from the next day, brush gently while avoiding the implant site. After meals, rinse just by holding lukewarm water or the prescribed mouthwash in your mouth and letting it flow out. After the stitches are removed, start cleaning the implant site too with a soft toothbrush. Smoking interferes with wound healing and bone bonding, so I strongly recommend quitting at least during this period.
How we do it at Wonjin Dental
Before surgery, Wonjin Dental first checks with panoramic and three-dimensional (CT) imaging whether a bone graft or sinus lift is needed. That is because how long you need to eat soft food and avoid alcohol differs depending on whether it is a simple placement or whether a bone graft or sinus lift is done together. We tell you the expected period before surgery, so if you have work dinners or travel plans, please let us know during your consultation. The detailed treatment process is on the Implant page.
Frequently asked questions
When can I eat ramen after an implant?
Because it is spicy, hot, and salty, I recommend eating it after the stitches are removed, usually from 1–2 weeks after. At first, let it cool and eat on the other side.
Can I eat ice cream?
Cold foods can actually help reduce swelling. However, avoid hard toppings such as cones or chocolate chips, and eat it with a spoon on the other side.
If I have a temporary tooth, can I chew with it?
A temporary tooth is for showing the shape, not for chewing. Do not bite food off with a front temporary tooth; eat with your back teeth instead.
Are there foods that help with recovery?
Protein helps wound healing, so include tofu, eggs, and tender fish. Not skipping meals is more important than any special supplement.
