Do implants hurt? Does it hurt during surgery?

During surgery, you're under local anesthesia, so you mainly feel pressure and vibration rather than sharp pain. Many people say the most uncomfortable moment is the brief sting of the anesthesia injection. Placing a single implant where there's enough bone usually takes 30 minutes to 1 hour. If you're very afraid of the dentist, let us know at the consultation, and we'll agree on a signal for taking breaks before we proceed.

How many days does pain last after implant surgery?

In most cases, the first 1–2 days hurt the most, and it noticeably decreases from day 3–4. Many people feel it's similar to or less than a wisdom tooth extraction, and it's at a level that can be managed with the prescribed painkillers.

How do you reduce swelling after an implant?

The basics are a cold compress for the first 48 hours and a warm compress after that. For a cold compress, wrap an ice pack in a towel, hold it against the outside of your cheek for 15–20 minutes, rest briefly, and repeat. When sleeping, raising your pillow to keep your head above your heart reduces swelling in the morning. Bruising can also appear on the cheek or under the jaw, but it usually turns yellow and fades within 1–2 weeks.

Stopping the bleeding on the first day is just as important as compresses. You need to keep biting firmly on the gauze given right after surgery for about 1–2 hours without talking, and a little blood mixed in your saliva is normal for a day or two. If you spit often or rinse hard on the first day, the blood clot comes off, bleeding starts again, and the pain lasts longer. Also avoid things that widen the blood vessels, like saunas, hot showers, and drinking alcohol, for a few days.

When do pain and swelling last longer?

The larger the surgical area, the longer the recovery.

  • If bone grafting was done at the same time: swelling can last more than 1 week.
  • If a sinus lift was done: you may have a stuffy nose or blood in your nose for a few days, and you shouldn't blow your nose hard for about 2 weeks.
  • If several implants were placed at once or the gum incision was large
  • If you smoke: wounds heal slowly and the risk of inflammation is higher.

How we do it at Wonjin Dental

Before surgery, Wonjin Dental uses panoramic and three-dimensional (CT) images to check the amount of bone and the positions of the lower jaw's nerve canal and the maxillary sinus (the hollow space inside the upper jawbone), and plans accordingly. Because we tell you in advance whether bone grafting or a sinus lift is needed, you can also estimate before surgery how many days to set aside for recovery. The treatment process is on the implant page, and what to check before surgery is in What to check before getting an implant.

Frequently asked questions

Can I go to work the day after implant surgery?

Most people with office jobs go to work the next day. If your work is physically demanding or you had extensive bone grafting, it's more comfortable to take 2–3 days off.

When can I start exercising after an implant?

Light walks are fine from 2–3 days later. Do exercise that makes you sweat a lot and strength training after 1 week, and saunas and swimming only after the stitches are out and the wound has closed.

Can I take painkillers I have at home?

Take the prescribed medication first, and if you want to add another medication, ask the dental clinic first. Aspirin-type medications can make it harder for bleeding to stop.

Does it hurt when the crown is placed?

The step of connecting the crown after the bone has bonded is mostly done without anesthesia or with light anesthesia, so it doesn't hurt much. If a second surgery to open the gum is needed, it may be mildly sore for a few days.
