How long does each type of orthodontic treatment take?

The length of treatment is decided less by the type of appliance than by how far the teeth need to move. The question I get most in the treatment room is “How many months until it's done?”, and below are the typical ranges.

Type of orthodonticsTypical durationTypical cases
Partial orthodontics3–8 monthsA few front teeth that are crooked or gapped
Clear aligners (light alignment)6–12 monthsMildly crowded teeth, small gaps
Clear aligners (moderate alignment)12–24 monthsAligning the full upper and lower arches
Full orthodontics (non-extraction)12–24 monthsCorrecting the bite as well, without extracting teeth
Full orthodontics (extraction)18–30 monthsTreatment where teeth are extracted and the spaces closed

Why does orthodontic treatment take longer for some people?

What extends treatment most is how far the teeth move and whether teeth are extracted. If teeth are extracted, closing those spaces usually takes several more months. I've explained why in Why teeth are extracted for orthodontics.

  • Skeletal problems where the size or position of the upper and lower jaws don't match
  • Cases where the gums and alveolar bone (the bone supporting the teeth) are weak, so only light force can be applied
  • Not wearing clear aligners long enough, or not wearing elastics
  • Leaving a detached bracket for a long time, or frequently postponing appointments

Can orthodontic treatment be shortened?

There is no way to cut it down significantly by applying stronger force. Teeth move as bone breaks down on one side and new bone forms on the other, and about 1mm a month is usually a safe pace. Rushing it raises the risk of the roots shortening or the gums receding.

Realistically, there are two ways to shorten treatment. If your concern is only the front teeth, narrow the scope and do partial orthodontics; if it's full orthodontics, keep up the wear time and appointments so the plan doesn't drag on.

How often do I visit the clinic during orthodontic treatment?

With braces, usually every 4 to 6 weeks; with clear aligners, every 6 to 10 weeks. With clear aligners, you change the aligners yourself at home, so the visits are further apart.

TypeVisit intervalWhat happens at the visit
Braces4–6 weeksWire change and adjustment, checking for detached brackets, instructions on elastics
Clear aligners6–10 weeksChecking movement, handing over the next aligners, checking attachments
Retention period3–6 months, then 6–12 monthsChecking the retainer's condition and tooth positions

Right after starting and in the finishing stage, the intervals may be shorter. For example, two years of braces means roughly 20 visits.

What happens if I postpone orthodontic appointments a few times?

Postponing once or twice won't throw things off much, but the overall timeline gets pushed back by that much. If a bracket stays detached for a long time, that tooth moves on its own and takes extra time to bring back. If your schedule is difficult, contact us in advance and move it to a nearby date.

How we do it at Wonjin Dental

At the orthodontic diagnosis, I give the expected duration as a range rather than a single number. Tooth movement differs from person to person and may need adjusting along the way. Orthodontics at Wonjin Dental includes full orthodontics (Clippy C, self-ligating braces), clear aligners (Seraphin), and partial orthodontics (MTA), and orthodontic cases are seen by Dr. Soyeon Kim of the orthodontics department.

Frequently asked questions

Who decides when treatment is finished?

The orthodontist decides, based on whether the target positions and bite set at the start have been reached. Even if the teeth look straight, if the upper and lower bite isn't quite right yet, we may refine it for a few more months.

What if I move or go abroad to study during treatment?

It's possible to continue at another clinic, but appliances and plans differ, so you often need a new diagnosis. If you know when you're leaving, tell us before starting and we can plan the duration and method around it.

Does the retainer period count as part of the treatment period?

Treatment duration usually refers only to the period of moving the teeth. The retainer comes separately afterward and lasts much longer. Detailed wear periods are covered in the retainer article.
