Why do teeth whitening results fade over time?
Because the color that was removed settles in again. Whitening removes color inside the tooth with an agent, without trimming the tooth, and even afterward the tooth surface takes on pigments from food, drinks, and tobacco every day. The returning color falls into two types.
| Returning color | Cause | How to reverse it |
|---|---|---|
| New stains settling on the surface | Coffee, tea, wine, curry, smoking | Scaling, stain removal |
| Color returning from inside | Dentin color removed by whitening gradually recovers | Additional whitening |
That's why I don't lump the two together under one date and promise “it lasts this many months.” Surface stains can be cleared away, and inner color can be brightened again with more whitening.
The original tooth color also has an effect. Strongly yellowish teeth brighten more, but the return is also easier to notice; grayish discoloration tends to respond more slowly to whitening.
Are there foods I shouldn't eat after teeth whitening?
For the first few days after whitening, the surface picks up stains more easily, so it's good to cut back on deeply colored foods. It's not a list of things you can never have again; the first few days and your habits afterward determine how long it lasts.
- Cut back on: deeply colored foods such as coffee, black and green tea, red wine, cola, curry, jajangmyeon (black bean noodles), and soy sauce, as well as smoking
- If you've had them: rinse your mouth with water right away
- Drink through a straw: it reduces contact time with the teeth
Teeth are brightest on the day of whitening, and the color settles over the following few days to few weeks. The color at that point is the baseline for how long it lasts. If you take the color on the day as the baseline, you'll feel “it came back quickly.”
Why does whitening seem to fade so quickly?
Because composite fillings and restorations don't brighten in the first place. Even if the surrounding teeth darken a little, the difference stands out more. Often, whitening seems short-lived not because it faded quickly but because composite that didn't brighten is still there. I've written about this separately in Can filled teeth be whitened?
How can I make teeth whitening results last longer?
- Brush two or three times a day, and rinse with water after strongly staining foods.
- Clear away surface stains with regular scaling (insurance-covered scaling is once a year).
- Smoking speeds up the return of color the most, so cut back on it first.
- When the color returns, have additional whitening at the clinic at intervals we set.
Don't substitute keeping the agent at home and applying it every day for maintenance. It only increases sensitivity. Sensitivity after whitening is covered in Does whitening make teeth sensitive?
How we do it at Wonjin Dental
There is in-office professional whitening and at-home whitening with trays, and teeth darkened by root canal treatment get separate non-vital tooth whitening. If you have a date to meet, we whiten first and place Brinate after the color settles, because porcelain can't be whitened. The types and process are on the teeth whitening page.

Frequently asked questions
How many whitening sessions do I need?
It depends on your original color and the brightness you want. Some people are satisfied after one session; if the yellowness is deep, it's split into several sessions. Splitting it up causes less sensitivity than doing it strongly all at once.
Which lasts longer, at-home or professional whitening?
Your habits afterward affect how long it lasts more than the method. At-home whitening trays are also used for maintenance, occasionally, when the color returns.
Does frequent whitening damage the teeth?
If the set concentration and intervals are followed, it doesn't wear away or weaken the teeth. However, doing it too often increases sensitivity and gum irritation, so have the clinic set the intervals.
When is it okay to smoke after whitening?
The first few days after whitening are when staining happens most easily, so I recommend avoiding it at least during that time. Smoking speeds up the return of color the most even afterward, so if lasting results are your goal, cutting back comes first.
